Keeping Your Wedding Guests Happy – Thoughts From a Recent Bride
On January 4th 2013 I got married to my lovely husband Nathan. (If you follow this blog you will know…) We had a small, intimate wedding with many of our guests flying in from across the globe. In addition to having them share in our special day, we wanted to make sure that all of our guests had a truly amazing experience. A little bit of effort goes a long way to keeping your guests happy, and there are a few things that can be done regardless of the budget to ensure your friends and family have a great day.
Everything I’m sharing comes from my own personal experience, and again, it is the personal touches that make a difference, so feel free to add your own flavor. So, how can you keep your guests happy?
1. Provide a unique setting
Regardless of your budget, there are many things that can be done to make your ceremony, venue, or overall event unique and memorable. Try to have something that your guests may never have seen before, or something they may never have experienced. This could involve ethnic traditions from back home, music, decor…anything really. It doesn’t have to be big, but just something that might stand out.
2. Food!… and drink
If you can, make sure your wedding guests are never left hungry and are never thirsty. There is nothing worse than a moaning hungry guest who is counting the minutes until dinner is served. The same goes for drinks (especially important in the warmer months). Always having a glass of ice water within reach can be worth more to a guest than the most expensive bottle of bubbles!
3. Entertainment – avoid “down-time”
It might sound obvious, but make sure your guests don’t have the chance to get bored. There may be parts of the day when you will be away from your guests, or when things don’t flow as well as expected A hot current trend is having a “photo booth”, it’s a great way to get your guests up and mingling, and lets face it.. everyone loves to strike a pose!
4. Make it personal
Perhaps most importantly, add personal touches to your wedding day. This can be done with little to no money, but have a huge impact on your guests’ experience. For example, Nathan and I wrote personalized thank you cards to each couple at our wedding. Just a quick note to say how much we appreciated them joining us, and thanking many of them for traveling long distances.
No matter what, your guests will have an amazing time celebrating your big day, but with a few added touches you can make it one they will never forget!
